Garretts Green

Garretts Green is a district in east Birmingham, lying between Sheldon, Tile Cross and the industrial corridor that runs alongside Birmingham Airport and the old Coventry Road. Although much of it is now suburban and residential, Garretts Green has always been closely tied to transport, engineering and the industries that grew up along one of the city’s most important eastern routes.

The name Garretts Green is thought to come from an early family name combined with a village green, reflecting its origins as a small rural settlement surrounded by farmland and common land. For centuries it sat on the edge of the main road from Birmingham to Coventry and London, making it a stopping point for travellers, carriers and later for stagecoaches and wagons carrying goods into the city.

The area changed dramatically in the twentieth century as Birmingham expanded eastwards. Large housing estates were built to accommodate workers employed in nearby factories, particularly those in the booming motor and aircraft industries. Garretts Green became a typical working and lower-middle-class suburb, with rows of houses, local shops and schools built around the needs of people who worked in the surrounding industrial belt.

One of the most important influences on Garretts Green has been its proximity to Birmingham Airport and the vast Elmdon and Sheldon industrial areas. Aircraft manufacturing, maintenance and aviation-related engineering have operated nearby since the 1930s, and during the Second World War the area was a major centre for aircraft production and repair. Thousands of people from Garretts Green and neighbouring districts were employed in these factories, making aviation a defining part of the local economy.

The district is also close to the former Lucas Aerospace and Dunlop factories, part of Birmingham’s globally significant engineering and automotive supply chain. These companies produced everything from aircraft components to braking systems and rubber products, linking Garretts Green to industries that reached far beyond the Midlands and into international markets.

Although much of the heavy industry has gone, Garretts Green remains shaped by its industrial past and its location beside major transport routes. Modern logistics, warehousing and airport-related businesses continue to provide employment, while the residential streets preserve the character of a suburb built to serve one of Britain’s most important manufacturing and aviation zones.

Garretts Green today is a settled, diverse district whose identity has always been defined by movement, machinery and travel. From horse-drawn wagons on the old Coventry Road to aircraft rising from the runways at Elmdon, it has long stood at the edge of Birmingham, looking outward to the wider world.
