Hill Hook

Hill Hook is a historic hamlet and modern residential district on the northern edge of Sutton Coldfield, lying between Four Oaks, Roughley and the open landscapes of Sutton Park. It occupies high ground overlooking the park and the countryside beyond, and its elevated position and rural setting are central to its identity. Long before suburban housing arrived, Hill Hook was a small farming community on the edge of Sutton Chase, the medieval royal hunting forest that once covered much of Sutton Coldfield.

The heart of the old settlement was the crossroads at Hill Hook, where farms, cottages and inns served both local people and travellers moving between Birmingham, Lichfield and the surrounding countryside. The most important surviving building from this period is the Old Horns Inn, a seventeenth-century public house that still stands today and is one of the oldest buildings in the Sutton Coldfield area. For centuries it was a vital stopping place for drovers, farmers and traders, and it remains the historic centre of Hill Hook.

Much of the original farmland and commons that once surrounded the hamlet is preserved in Hill Hook Nature Reserve, which lies on the northern side of the district. This protected area of woodland, hedgerows and meadows represents the last surviving fragment of the landscape that gave Hill Hook its name and existence. It shows what this part of Sutton Coldfield was like before suburban development spread across the fields in the twentieth century.

Hill Hook also lies directly against the boundary of Sutton Park, one of the largest and most important urban parks in Europe and a designated national nature reserve. This parkland was once part of the royal hunting grounds, and Hill Hook’s position on its edge explains why a small rural community developed here in the first place. The park still shapes the area today, giving Hill Hook a green, open setting that is rare within Birmingham.

After the Second World War, housing estates were built across much of the surrounding land, transforming Hill Hook into a suburban district and linking it more closely with Four Oaks and Walmley. Despite this, the presence of the Old Horns Inn, the nature reserve and Sutton Park means that Hill Hook has retained a strong sense of its village origins.

Today Hill Hook is a quiet residential area with a deep and visible connection to its past. Its combination of ancient routes, historic buildings and preserved countryside makes it one of the most distinctive and historically grounded parts of Sutton Coldfield, where the modern city still meets the landscape of the medieval forest.
