Bantock House was originally completed in 1788 and was inherited by Baldwin Bantock from his father in 1896. From what is known of Bantock, he appears to have been a keen gardener. The original name of the house was Merridale Farm, which explains the surviving farm courtyard and outbuildings that now accommodate tea rooms and visitor facilities.
Bantock House received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, allowing extensive restoration work to be carried out in 1999. Today, the house contains a number of fine art displays and includes dedicated sections exploring the history of Wolverhampton.
The museum also houses collections of dolls, japanned ware and enamelware. Although the formal gardens around the house are now relatively small, the surrounding parkland, once part of the estate, provides a peaceful and attractive open space within the city.
