Springfield is a residential district within the Acocks Green Ward of south-east Birmingham, developed mainly during the late Victorian and inter-war periods as the city expanded outward. The area is characterised by red-brick terraces and semi-detached houses built to provide improved living conditions for Birmingham’s growing industrial workforce.
The district grew alongside improved transport links, allowing residents to commute to factories and workshops across Birmingham and the wider Midlands. While Springfield itself was not heavily industrial, it was closely connected to the city’s manufacturing economy through its residents.
Springfield Park has long been a focal point for the area, offering open space, sports facilities and a sense of relief from surrounding housing. Today, Springfield remains a settled, predominantly residential neighbourhood, valued for its green space, accessibility and its role as a good example of Birmingham’s 20th-century suburban development.
