Epsom in Surrey was originally called Evesham. A settlement has been here since Saxon times when Epsom took its name from Ebba’s Ham, Ebba being a well known and influential Saxon landowner at the time.
The town is famous for its chalk downs and the valley of Epsom Downs where the famous racecourse can be found. The Epsom Derby takes place here every year. The main high street in Epsom is dominated by the 1847 clock tower which has a very striking and unique appearance.
Modern day Epsom is not particularly striking and apart from a few fine buildings it looks like many other towns of similar size around this region of the UK. Shopping is a mixture of branded names and some independent stores and the town has profited from its close proximity to London.
