The Birmingham Botanical Gardens consist of 15 acres in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Designed by J.C. Loudon, they opened to the public in 1832. Typically Victorian, with a bandstand and glasshouses, the gardens are open every day of the year and provide a popular and peaceful retreat for the citizens of Birmingham.
The impressive Terrace is named after its creator and provides the best vantage point from which to see the gardens in their full glory. The lawn is sheltered from the wind and an ideal place to sit and relax on sunny days.
A main feature of the Botanical Gardens are the Tropical and Subtropical houses which can be visited at any time of the year regardless of weather conditions outside. The tropical conditions provide for a diverse range of plants and the humid conditions create the atmosphere of an enclave of a forest in far off lands.
