The Herbert

Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, often simply known as the Herbert, is Coventry’s principal museum and one of the city’s most important cultural institutions. Located in the heart of the city centre near the cathedral, it tells the story of Coventry from its medieval beginnings through its industrial rise to its modern identity, while also housing one of the finest regional art collections in the Midlands.

The museum is named after Sir Alfred Herbert, the industrialist and philanthropist who made his fortune through engineering and machine tools. Herbert was one of Coventry’s leading industrial figures in the early twentieth century, and his donation made it possible for the city to establish a permanent museum and art gallery. The Herbert opened in 1960 as part of Coventry’s post-war rebuilding, providing a cultural centre for a city that had been so heavily damaged during the Blitz.

One of the Herbert’s greatest strengths is its coverage of Coventry’s history. Its galleries trace the city’s development from a medieval cloth and trading centre, through the rise of watchmaking, bicycle manufacture and the motor industry, to the modern era. Exhibits include everything from medieval artefacts and industrial machinery to personal stories of life in Coventry during wartime and reconstruction, giving a deeply human view of the city’s past.

The museum also plays a major role in preserving Coventry’s artistic heritage. It holds significant collections of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts, with a particular focus on British art. Temporary exhibitions regularly bring major national and international shows to the city, ensuring that the Herbert remains a living, evolving cultural space rather than just a store of historic objects.

The Herbert is also known for its interactive and family-friendly approach. Displays are designed to engage visitors of all ages, with hands-on elements, digital exhibits and storytelling that bring history and art to life. This has helped make it one of the most popular museums in the West Midlands, attracting both local residents and visitors from across the region.

Beyond its galleries, the Herbert is an important civic landmark. It sits within Coventry’s rebuilt city centre, close to the old and new cathedrals, forming part of the cultural heart of the city. In this way, it reflects Coventry’s determination after the Second World War not only to rebuild its streets and factories, but also to invest in education, culture and public life.

Today Herbert Art Gallery & Museum continues to act as Coventry’s memory and creative showcase, connecting the city’s medieval roots, industrial achievements and modern cultural ambitions in one accessible and inspiring place.
