The Moseley Society is one of Moseley’s most important community and heritage organisations, dedicated to preserving the history, character and identity of this distinctive south Birmingham district. Formed in the mid-twentieth century as suburban expansion and modern development began to change the face of Moseley, the Society has long acted as a steward of the area’s heritage and a voice for residents.
The Society’s work covers a wide range of activities, from recording local history and campaigning to protect historic buildings, to organising talks, walks and events that engage the community with its past. One of its most notable achievements has been the preservation and restoration of the Moseley Dovecote, an eighteenth-century estate building that survived the sweeping changes of the twentieth century and now stands as one of the few remaining links to the old Moseley Hall estate. The Society also champions other heritage features such as the icehouse and educates residents about the layers of history beneath modern streets.
In addition to heritage conservation, the Moseley Society promotes community life through exhibitions, publications and regular social events. It maintains archives, collects memories, old photographs and documents, and works closely with local schools, historians and civic groups to share Moseley’s stories with younger generations.
