The “Famous James”
The James Cycle Company was one of Birmingham’s best-known cycle and light motorcycle makers, rooted in the city’s late-Victorian engineering boom and remembered for practical, well-finished machines that suited everyday British roads. The firm began as a bicycle manufacturer in Birmingham, later moving into motorcycles and becoming strongly associated with its Greet works, where much of its 20th-century story played out.
From bicycles to motorcycles
James built its first motorcycle in 1902, part of a wider Midlands pattern where successful bicycle firms began experimenting with engines as demand for motor transport grew. Early James output included a mix of lightweight machines aimed at affordability and reliability rather than outright speed, which helped the brand develop a loyal following.
Growth and engineering reputation
By the 1900s and 1910s James had expanded into larger premises in Greet, Birmingham, and developed a reputation for sound, practical engineering. The company is often linked with design developments in the pre-war period and, like many makers of the time, supplied machines and cycles connected to wartime needs and general transport demand.
Post-war pressures and takeover by AMC
After the Second World War, financial strain hit many British motorcycle firms. James was taken over by Associated Motor Cycles (AMC) in 1951. From 1957, James motorcycles became effectively badge-engineered equivalents of Francis-Barnett machines within the AMC group (often differentiated mainly by finish and branding).
Despite popular lightweight models, the James name faded as the British industry struggled against cheaper, highly reliable imports. James production ended in the mid-1960s.
How the name lived on, and today’s revival
Although the original Birmingham manufacturing story ended decades ago, the James name has been revived in the modern era as a boutique marque. The current revival presents “The James” as a limited-numbers, British-designed return rather than a continuation of the original factory production.
