Attingham Park

Built in 1785 for the 1st Lord Berwick. The property features a picture gallery by John Nash and collections of silver, Italian furniture and Grand Tour Paintings. There is a Deer Park with walks alongside the river Tern.

Attingham Park is one of Shropshire’s most popular National Trust properties, offering a mix of grand architecture, beautiful parkland and family-friendly activities. The heart of the estate is Attingham Hall, an elegant Georgian mansion where you can explore restored rooms, learn about the Berwick family and see ongoing conservation work. The surrounding grounds are just as impressive: from the sweeping lawns and woodland pathways to the peaceful walled garden and orchard, there’s plenty to discover throughout the year.

For nature lovers, the deer park is a highlight. Fallow deer roam freely across the estate, and you can often see them from designated viewing areas or while walking one of the many marked trails. The River Tern adds to the charm, with picturesque bridges, quiet riverside stretches and habitats rich in wildlife. Families will find the play areas, woodland trails and seasonal activities ideal for keeping children busy, while the estate café and shop offer a comfortable place to relax afterwards.

Best time to visit

Attingham Park is beautiful in all seasons.

  • Spring brings blossom, lambs on the Home Farm and colourful gardens.
  • Summer is perfect for picnics, longer walks and spotting wildlife.
  • Autumn offers extraordinary colour across the woodland and deer rut activity.
  • Winter is quieter but atmospheric, especially around Christmas when the house is decorated.

Practical information

The estate is located just off the A5 near Shrewsbury, with ample parking managed by the National Trust. Paths around the mansion and walled garden are accessible, though some woodland routes may be uneven. Dogs are welcome in most outdoor areas (excluding the deer park), making it a good destination for dog-walkers. As a National Trust property, members enter for free, while non-members can buy tickets online or at the gate.
