Harlech

Harlech

Harlech Castle is one of Edward I fortress castles built to control the Welsh after occupation by the English. Whilst the castle appears to have been built inland it was in actual fact built by the sea. Over the years the coastline has changed so it now almost half a mile inland.

The castle has experienced several battles and sieges in its time.It is also famous for the song ‘Men of Harlech’ which was written during the seven year long siege of Harlech Castle during the War of the Roses which commenced in 1461.

The main gatehouse of Harlech Castle is particularly impressive as is the condition of the castle in general.
