Duncan Edwards was born in Dudley in 1936. He was a footballer for Manchester United as well as the England national team. Edwards had a professional football career spanning just under 5 years, brought to an abrupt end when he died of injuries sustained in the Munich Air disaster of February 1958. Other members of the newly formed Manchester United football team also died when their plane crashed after failing to take off.
Duncan Edwards was the youngest player in the Football League First Division. Without doubt he was a talented footballer and would have had a promising career ahead of him had his life not been cut short so tragically in 1958. He was laid to rest at the Dudley
Cemetery where his tombstone reads;
“A day of memory, Sad to
recall, Without farewell, He left us all”
There are many tributes to Duncan Edwards and it is widely believed that had he lived he would have gone on to become one of the most accomplished players football has ever seen and one of the most famous names in football history. Known affectionately as
“Big Dunc” and “The Tank”, his funeral was attended by over 5,000 local people.
