Berkswell Windmill

Berkswell Windmill was built in 1826 on the site of an earlier post mill and is the most complete tower mill in the West Midlands. The mill is a genuine time capsule, preserved much as it was when it ceased working in 1948.

Situated on Windmill Lane at Balsall Common, Berkswell Windmill is run by volunteers who offer fully guided tours from May to October. Although there is a modest entrance fee, all proceeds go towards the upkeep and conservation of the mill.

The mill was wind-driven until 1927 and later powered by a diesel engine until 1948. It originally produced flour and later animal feed, and all of the internal machinery can still be seen. Locally, the windmill is often referred to as Balsall Windmill.

In 1971 the windmill was restored by George Field and later by Paul and Jeanette McGarry in 2004, who established the Friends of Berkswell Windmill group to help manage the site and raise funds for its continued preservation.

The windmill is open by appointment and on selected Bank Holidays.
