Birmingham City Developments
Transformation of the city with over £3.5 billion worth of investment
The
rate at which Birmingham City continues to progress is awe inspiring
and inspirational. We have seen Brindleyplace, The Mailbox, Millenium
Point and most recently the spectacular Bull Ring development.
Attention now turns to the regeneration zone on Eastside and South
Birmingham. Work continues to improve the city infrastructure and a
host of programs are underway. These pages are here to keep you
informed of the latest developments.
No 1 Colmore Square
A flagship office development with 10 floors of office space. Proposed finish date is 2004.
Centenary Plaza
Due for completion in 2004 this development will be Birmingham's
tallest residential block. To include 387 flats, a 19 storey building
with a health club and business units.
Digbeth Area
There are numerous
projects around the city that are turning old office blocks into modern
new city living accommodation. The Digbeth area will see modernisation
of old buildings and the cleaning up of well known landmarks.
Masshouse Circus
Work has already
started at Masshouse Circus near Millenium Point as part of the city's
strategy of demolition of old sixties style eyesores and block
concrete. This complete elevated structure is being demolished and the
area around it landscaped to integrate it with Millenium Point and the
modern new buildings destined to change the whole environment of
Eastside. Joining up with Moor Street, the new offices, residential
units and leisure and retail buildings will change this run down area
of Birmingham beyond recognition.
Moor Street
New development along Moor Street Boulevard has seen
the new bus terminal with additional connections into the local area and Moor Street Station
itself which has been completely refurbished and provides new rail links from the South East of the City of Birmingham.
City Park
This new park will
cover the area from Curzon Street Station to the Digbeth Canal. The
park will link up with Millenium Point and provide much needed city
centre green space. Pathways and Squares will add a more pleasing
environment and landscaping which is much needed in this area of
Birmingham.
Colleges and Universities
The local colleges
and universities are playing an important role in this regeneration of
our city. Aston University has already made commendable progress with
its pleasant environment and involvement with the Aston Science Park.
The University of Central England has participated in the regeneration
and is likely to become home of the new Birmingham Library. It's
Technology Innovation Centre will be housed at Millenium Point. The
University of Central England will move the Birmingham Conservatoire to
a brand new building in Eastside.
The South Birmingham
College will soon have its new complex in Eastside at a cost of £16
million, providing brand new educational facilities and a 500 seat
conference theatre. Matthew Boulton College is scheduled for a complete
new and exciting new college environment with exceptional new buildings
and landscaping.
The Bullring
The transformation of the Bull Ring has changed the face of the city centre of Birmingham.
At a cost of £500 million, this huge project has revitalised over 110,000 square metres of
shopping area in the centre of the city. This development has introduced Selfridges and Debenhams
to the city centre and many other well known retail chains stores have opened up with 132 retail units
now situated in the new centre.
We have already seen the changes that the new indoor market has brought to a previously run down area of the city.
The complex will be linked up with a new style attractive park and walkways that will join up to the
city centre.
This is Europe's largest city centre shopping development.
Martineau Square
Martineau Square in
the heart of Birmingham City will be transformed into a modern new
complex with extensive retail and food outlets.
Birmingham Library
The Birmingham
Library which was built in the 1970's is due to be replaced. The likely
location will be Eastside. This project is likely to create great
interest and provide Birmingham with a new and impressive landmark for
the city.
Whats Happening at Fort Dunlop?
Currently not a lot.
The worlds largest advertising poster is draped all over the exterior
but a serious start to the complex has still to take place. Funding has
been earmarked by Advantage West Midlands.
Fort Dunlop Factory
due for completion in 2005 will become home to The Birmingham Post and
the Evening Mail as well as a host of other publishing companies.
Destined to become one of the most modern newspaper production
facilities in Europe.
Arena Central
Arena Central will
be located between the Mailbox and Centenary Square. Destined to become
a multi million pound mixed use development it will feature more than
380 apartments, one of Europe's tallest buildings, the new Crowne Plaza
Hotel and offices. A feature of this complex will be an indoor lake
which can be frozen and used as an ice skating rink.
Ludgate - New Coach Station
This 2 acre site on
Great Charles Street Queensway is destined to become the new transport
centre for the city of Birmingham. Featuring a 25 bay coach station,
modern restaurant facilities, a hotel and air conditioned offices this
modern and stylish replacement will get rid of the embarassing excuse
of a coach station in Digbeth. At last the city is to get a transport
centre worthy of any in Europe. Connections from the centre will be in
place to link up with the rail network and metro system. Currently
scheduled for completion in 2005.
Broadway Plaza
This development is just off Edgbaston Five Ways on the site of the old childrens hospital.
With 1,400 parking spaces and retail units on 3 floors, this is the biggest
commercial leisure complex in the city. A 20 screen AMC cinema, bowling,
health and fitness centre and a host of restaurants and bars compliment the retail units.

road structure blocking the expansion of the city centre. This is to
become a tree lined boulevard leading into the heart of Eastside and
